Planning your paving or gravel
How much gravel do I need?
Multiply the area in square metres by the depth in metres, then by 1.6 for tonnes. Borders usually take 30 to 40mm, and adding 10% covers settling. Our guide to gravel and bark has the full sums.
Do I need a membrane under gravel?
Yes. A weed membrane keeps most weeds down and stops the stones sinking into the soil.
Which paving suits a patio?
Indian sandstone is a popular, affordable natural stone. Granite and slate are tougher, and porcelain needs the least upkeep. Concrete slabs and block paving are the other common choices. Our paving guide compares them.
How much paving should I order?
Around 10% more than the area, to allow for cuts and sorting. Lay it on a compacted sub-base and a full bed of mortar, never on spots.
